Shuttle Mission STS-124 with orbiter Discover and a crew of 7 successfully lifted off at 5:02 PM EST. I had the pleasure of witnessing this event first hand from press site here at KSC. There is not much one can say to place such an amazing experience into words. Shortly after lift off I was on the phone with Prof. Pamela Gay speechless only able to utter the word “WOW.” I am unable to describe FEELING the shuttle take off, listening to the lid on my laptop rattle, as the immense power of the rockets vibrates my chest, utterly awestruck frozen in place. Shortly after lift off Discover flew behind a cloud only to emerge again a shiny metallic spot against the clear blue sky. It was truly amazing when I saw the Solid Rocket Boosters begin to fall back to Earth for ocean recovery. When the SRBs fall off Discovery is high enough to look back and see across the entire width of Florida. Its mind boggling to think that I could see that from the ground. There she was in all her glory, a symbol of humankind’s ambition, inginuity, and continual strive to better both the Earth we live on and the people who inhabit it.
