I know that the news about the Milky Way being a barred spiral first came out in the mid nineties, because I remember reading about it in one of the World Book Encyclopedia "Science Year" annual supplements, to which my family only subscribed for a few years.

It sticks in my memory as one of the first times I became aware, as a result of a specific discovery, that the astronomy books I'd read as a child were out of date.

So, this means that the labelling of the Galactic map shown in this APOD article isn't valid anymore? The same picture (without the labels) is used in Fraser's The Milky Way Has Only Two Spiral Arms article...

As always, very enjoyable and informative!
