I was so shocked when I heard about this mandate against searching for life that I had to rush right over here to the Web site, ready to dive into the forums looking for a discussion on the topic. I may still do that, but I see Pamela already answered the question.

Congress is great and all (for the most part) but I wish more of them believed (for lack of a better word) in space exploration.

On a note unrelated to the mandate stuff, I ADORE Astronomy Cast. You two are seriously awesome.

I searched far and wide for some reference to a Congressional ban on a search for life. Unable to find anything remotely close to it. In fact, recently, there seems to be pretty solid bipartisan support for a range of NASA's programs. A pretty good show nonetheless.

Still looking for a good reference, but as a cost saving measure, in1993 Congress cut all NASA programs designed to search for intelligent life. I sat in on a great talk a couple years ago that chronicled how NASA went from life life life, to NO life, to, well, searching for signs of life is great and maybe you can look for bacteria.
