Gregg-

See the Universe Today article about a one-way, one person mission to Mars, and the subsequent article about US soldiers who volunteered to go:

Hi-- Thanks for the great comments.
A minor correction: Dr. Gay mentioned that the "Case for Mars" mission concept, published by the AAS, built on the "Mars Direct" concept. Actually, the original Case for Mars mission concepts, published in a series of conference proceedings by the American Astronautical Society, dated to 1981, while Zubrin and Baker's Mars Direct dates to 1989 and 1990. (It's a little confusing, because Rob Zubrin took used the phrase "Case for Mars," the name of the conference series, for his "Mars Direct" book).

I've been listening to the Mars discussions during my commute. It strikes me that one plan that hasn't been discussed (or has it?) would be to send some old guy(s) like me (volunteer) to set up shop on Mars with NO intention of returning. We have the capability of landing small payloads (food, water, O2, etc) on the planet, so why not an outpost for someone who might be willing to spend their final days exploring the planet just the way the early colonizers came to a lot of 'new lands'. My spouse thinks I'm crazy and has told me she doesn't want to go. Anyone else interested?
